REQUIEM POR LORCA

Requiem for Lorca is a collective ode to loss, a celebration of mourning, and an act of remembrance and hope for the city of Granada. From October 15 to 18, 2026, four events, one per day, will weave together this contemporary requiem, beginning and ending with the manual tolling of the Torre de la Vela’s bell. As a symbolic thread of the project, the calligram Rosa de la muerte, created by Federico García Lorca in 1934, articulates and gives name to the four acts described below.

ABOUT THE PROJECT
Maral Kekejian and Pep Olona are the artistic directors of the project. Since 2024, they have been developing a curatorial project centered on the concept of Requiem and the conviction that contemporary artistic creation can dwell in collective memory and public acts of remembrance and reparations, being the public sphere the natural space where such memory becomes corporeal.
Réquiem por Lorca (Granada, 15–18 October, 2026), is a large-scale civic piece developed in collaboration with the Fundación Federico García Lorca, with the support of the Ministerio de Política Territorial y Memoria Democrática, the Ministerio de Cultura, Ayuntamiento de Granada, the Fundación “la Caixa”, the Fundación de la Alhambra and Generalife, the Festival Internacional de Música y Danza de Granada and the Orquesta y Coro de la Ciudad de Granada. Requiem for Lorca is the embodiment of a shared memory. Four acts of artistic interventions during four days, created especially for the occasion, unfold as a continuous narrative around Lorca’s Rosa de la muerte calligram. The city itself—together with its neighbors—is the true protagonist of this event, commemorating the 90th anniversary of the murder of Federico García Lorca. Forming part of a trilogy originated in 2024 with the first #Réquiem in Madrid, it was originally designed around Mozart’s piece and interpreted by Spanish contemporary artists in the context of the POETAS Festival, with the collaboration of the Ministerio de Cultura and La Casa Encendida. The third chapter, Réquiem al exilio, will conclude in 2027 thanks to the support of the Ministerio de Cultura and New York’s Book Fair in Spanish and will celebrate the centenary of the Generation of ’27.
